Foxy bassists, ghosts, shipping containers and new friends

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

Well, I’ve been here around 2 months now – in some ways it feels like longer – things are somewhat settled and comfortable now, but in others, it seems like it’s been less time.. still so much is unknown!

I managed to see Disasteradio in the end at the Evelyn on Brunswick Street. Excellent, as always, DRad always manages to put a massive grin on my face :)

Saw a local act, Gotye, play at the Prince Bandroom, which is a great venue in St Kilda – seems to host a lot of international acts there too.. (see pic of upcoming shows there)

MindlessSelfIndulgance_1Went to the Soundwave festival with Clara, out of the 40-odd bands playing, we only really knew about 5 of them between us… we managed to mostly avoid the Emo bands, and very definitely avoided Incubus – highlights were Divine Heresy and As I Lay Dying and from Autumn to Ashes(all of the grr metal variety. Mindless Self Indulgence were outstanding and loads of fun. It also helps that the female bass player is a total fox, and definitely had the moves :)
The Offspring were on last, and were great, nostalgia++. As per usual, I’ve got videos up at http://youtube.com/user/haxtheplanet.

Muse

Monday, November 26th, 2007

I’ve seen a fair few truly awesome live bands in my time, including Metallica (before they started to suck too much), Tool, ZZ Top, Shihad, The Living End, Ben Harper, Pantera, A Perfect Circle and Roger Waters

Muse have pretty much just blown all of them out of the water.. I’ve not seen a band before play with such incredible intensity.

I managed to capture http://youtube.com/watch?v=KYng3bRqlyw and http://youtube.com/watch?v=MFAfQ43BDOs on my N95 (although youtube degrades the quality a bit)

New Job!

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

Looks like I have a new job in Melbourne! I start on the 2nd of January at Stock Software.. They are a small contracting / consultancy type place, and it sounds like I’ll be working on some cool J2EE stuff as well as some Ruby on Rails, which I should have some fun learning. Windows based desktops though.. I might end up having to use…… Vista.. Ergh.

I should be heading over just after Christmas, so there’s a little bit of time for me to get myself all packed and organised. I’ll probably typically leave everything until the last minute :)

Got a new Nokia N95, mainly for the GPS feature so I don’t get too lost… Oh how I do like the new toys :)

Going to see Muse tomorrow night, that should be awesome.

New music

Monday, June 18th, 2007

Went a little crazy on the weekend and ended up purchasing 4 albums:

  • Dawn Plane by Lucid 3 (I’m secretly in love with Victoria from this band… so sexy and a gorgeous voice too)
  • Long Player by Hollie Smith (nice, but I haven’t been blown away by it.. maybe it’ll grow on me)
  • We were dead before the ship even sank by Modest Mouse.  (Good. Liking their first album better at the moment)
  • Greatest Hits Vol 1: Stevie Ray Vaughan (incredible blues guitar legend.. nothing more needs to be said)

On Lindon Puffin and Eric Raymond’s dating tips

Sunday, May 6th, 2007

On Friday, I cruised along to Al’s Bar (next the Pak n’ Save of all places) to see Lindon Puffin play a show for the release of his new (and very long awaited) CD, “Show Pony”. As always, Lindon was very entertaining, and was in fine form… the stories were very funny – I feel sorry for “Emily Archer” for whom he wrote clever little song about only meeting someone a couple of times and forming an obsession over it. Turns out a few people at the gig know Emily Archer.. and someone called her on his cell and was like “Yeah, Emily… yeah.. he totally did the song…. yeah….” (and then walked off outside). It’s a darn shame it’s not on the album. Was a little sad that he didn’t do more songs from “Stuff like that”, but the new material is very good, as were the cover songs he did, including unforgettable moments such as Snoop Dogg’s “Bitches ain’t shit” done on the Ukelele. He’s touring soon, so if you get a chance to see Lindon Play, do…

By some total random chance, I ended up going to the Christchurch Symphony on Saturday night.. one of Liz’s friends ended up with a spare ticket, and a few frantic last-minute txts, and a hurried jog to my car later, I was in the town hall listening to Grieg’s Piano Concerto, which was actually pretty enjoyable – the last time I’d sat down to listen to classical music was probably in my first year at university…

A google search for ‘geek dating’ turned up these three pages, which seems to offer some pretty sound advice, but the most disturbing thing, is that they appear to have been written by none other than Eric Raymond. Yes, this Eric Raymond:

Eric Raymond.. doing.. something

Of course, one cannot mention him without mentioning the excellent Everybody Loves Eric Raymond webcomic.

Oh, I solved my async JMS callback problem, using a fairly in-elegant hack, where I have a singleton object which maps the session bean instances to a reference ID, which I then pass in via the JMS message. It’s ugly, but it works :-/
