No backing out now

Well, I’m officially all packed and moved out of my house.. I’m staying with Chris and Fran for a few days. My plane leaves for Melbourne on Thursday (wow.. 3 days away…) afternoon. I’ll be staying for the first week at the King Street Backpackers, and who-knows-where after that 😉

I start work on the 2nd of Jan, and have been told to turn up to a client’s site first thing, so it looks like it’ll really be a trial-by-fire – should be exciting.

Had my leaving party on Saturday, thanks heaps to everyone who came along, I had a good time catching up to you all (and drinking waaaay too much). James took heaps of photos, they can be seen here.

Muse

I’ve seen a fair few truly awesome live bands in my time, including Metallica (before they started to suck too much), Tool, ZZ Top, Shihad, The Living End, Ben Harper, Pantera, A Perfect Circle and Roger Waters

Muse have pretty much just blown all of them out of the water.. I’ve not seen a band before play with such incredible intensity.

I managed to capture http://youtube.com/watch?v=KYng3bRqlyw and http://youtube.com/watch?v=MFAfQ43BDOs on my N95 (although youtube degrades the quality a bit)

New Job!

Looks like I have a new job in Melbourne! I start on the 2nd of January at Stock Software.. They are a small contracting / consultancy type place, and it sounds like I’ll be working on some cool J2EE stuff as well as some Ruby on Rails, which I should have some fun learning. Windows based desktops though.. I might end up having to use…… Vista.. Ergh.

I should be heading over just after Christmas, so there’s a little bit of time for me to get myself all packed and organised. I’ll probably typically leave everything until the last minute 🙂

Got a new Nokia N95, mainly for the GPS feature so I don’t get too lost… Oh how I do like the new toys 🙂

Going to see Muse tomorrow night, that should be awesome.

A night out

Well, after having what I can only describe as a fairly bad week, I managed to get out of the house, and off to some gigs, accompanied by Miss Caroline.

Went to see Liam Finn (again), but this time he was playing in St Michaels church in town, supported by Dictaphone Blues (which is one of the guys from Degrees.K backed by the Heavy Jones Trio). They were great, but due to our expected lateness, only caught a couple of songs from them. Was very impressed though, the acoustics in the church were amazing.. all venues should be long, and have very high angled wooden ceilings. Liam was also excellent, and segued (quite a bit) into crazy layered noise jams right in the middle of quite lovely pop songs. It was very entertaining at least. I’m thinking I’m going to have to buy his new album, the material is very good.

Went back to the Dux, and got there in time to see the Charlie Ash (hadn’t seen them before), who played some quite dancable sexy electro-pop (perhaps the girls in the blue and yellow leotards helped), who were excellent. Bumped into Fran just as she was leaving there to go to “The Loons” in Lyttelton, for the “She’ll Be Right Records” showcase show.

Once Charlie Ash finished, went over to The Loons, which I have now decided is the coolest bar in the greater Christchurch area. There was a blues jam band playing (whose name I managed to miss), and Shay and Jodi giving out raffle prizes.. just an awesome vibe.

Got breath tested on the way home, but I’d only had a couple of beers all night, so that was all good. All in all had a really good (non-date-styles) night, and has lifted my spirits a fair bit 🙂

Got a phone interview with a place in Melbourne tomorrow afternoon. Should be interesting.

Tattoos and other stuff

Well, I’ve finally got my first tattoo. It’s on my left ankle, and didn’t hurt anywhere nearly as much as everyone made out it would. Fiona did the design for me, which came out perfect, despite my just about complete inability to describe what it was I actually wanted. Fiona rocks. If I haven’t shown you already, then email me, and I’ll flick you a link to some photos, and I can explain the story behind it 🙂

I really want to get more now. They shall have to wait.

My best friend in the world has gone and fallen in love and moved away to Wellington. Well, actually Lower Hutt, which IMO, is not where I’d chose to live 🙂 I’m very happy for her, bit sad for me, but I’m planning on buggering off as well, so I can’t really complain! I’m heading up to visit this long weekend 🙂

Gonna head up to visit my folks in a couple of weeks too.

Been steadily flogging off or giving away much of everything that I own. That’s been surprisingly good 🙂

Caroline arrived back from Europe, which has been really nice, but she’s back just as everyone else, including Matt & Liz are leaving! Bad timing there…

Been busy at work (for once).. the spam gateway is done, IMO performance issues fixed… just need to convince “the gatekeepers” as such 🙂 Been working on an installer for another product which débuts in San Francisco in a couple of days.. pressure really has been on for this one. I’ve decided I much prefer working when there’s a deadline on. I just slack off too much otherwise.

And, I upgraded my PC in the end. It’s nice and fast now, so that puts a happy smile on my face at least 🙂
