Visits, zombies, more gigs and incredible co-incidences…

So Fran came over to visit, to check out what this whole “Melbourne” thing I’ve been ranting on and on about…

Highlights:

  • The Gin Club at The Gem in Collingwood – basically we were looking to go to a gig, and it was Sunday night, and I’d heard that this was on. We get into this tiny little suburban pub, and it’s totally packed out, standing room only. We then find out why; The Gin Club are just fantastically awesome. They’re a 7 (or so) piece from Brisbane, and all the band members write songs, and take turns at doing their songs. Everybody sings. At once. Just awesome
  • Empanadas and other South American sweet foods in Fitzroy. Also Churros.
  • Going to the State Library, both NGV galleries, seeing all the graffiti art in the laneways.
  • Managing to go to the galleries, Queen Vic markets and Luna park… on the one day of the week that those things were individually closed… no forward planning FTL.
  • Lots of wandering around town
  • Some really terrible grunge band at Pony. Followed by a better indie punk group afterwards
  • Catching up with Becca / cocktail bars

Magical month of May

Ok, so I seem to doing these at the rate of one a month. I’m feeling very lazy this month, so you poor people only get the very condensed version 😛

Wellington: I managed to get a couple of days off work (which doesn’t seem very hard to do), and I flew over to Wellington for Chant’s 30th birthday. It was really good to see everyone, and in a lot of ways it was like coming home. The shortcut taken down off the hill, through the bush and across the motorway to get into Lower Hutt certainly had the right amount of random idiocy I’ve come to expect 🙂 The guy trying to buy Steve’s truck was dodgy as fuck. His sob story about his burnt out car was really something. Never got round to playing a game of “Killer Bunnies.” If you want pictures of the party, you’ll have to ask me nicely for the link 🙂

Movie of the week: Went to see “Lars and the Real Girl” at the Nova cinemas with an internet “meetup” group (all in the interests of making some more friends here in Melbourne). It was exceptionally good, and I fully recommend it to everyone. Funny and heartbreaking all at the same time. Continue reading Magical month of May

On interweb trends

It seems that not only do I have a blog now, but I find myself being increasingly suck(er)ed into these social networking sites. I now find I have a bebo, am on oldfriends.co.nz a dreaded myspace, and now also a facebook.

So far, facebook has the least offensive user interface. So much time-wasting, but it seems like good distraction from the JAAS security problems I’m having with JBoss right now 🙂
